NOTE TO SELF: Relax. As the fall semester begins, so will the stress of the college workload and with a multiplying to do lists, it is easy to forget to just relax. On August 28th, 2014, University at Buffalo’s PGS Ambassadors Jessica (@aubonbain) and Kayla (@kayla.alyak) took advantage of the beautiful Buffalo, NY weather and did some yoga between classes. The warm sun and relaxing breeze helped Jessica find her center through the eagle pose while Kayla strengthened her core by perfecting her tripod handstand. “Yoga allows you to put all the chaos around you on pause and be still,” said PGS Ambassador Kayla. Unity is strength. When there is teamwork and collaboration, wonderful things can be achieved. The Teen Diaries Foundation proved just that on Thursday, August 28th by joining forces with model / dancer / NBA correspondent Damaris Lewis for a back to school TRX class for 12 deserving teen girls. The workout was apart of the foundation’s popular Pretty Girls Sweat program, a fitness initiative launched to fight childhood obesity, and took place at Nimble Fitness in New York City.

What is TRX? As explained by the event’s fitness instructor Suzie Gavers, “TRX was born in the Navy SEALs. It is a Suspension Training bodyweight exercise that develops strength, balance, flexibility and core stability simultaneously and requires the use of the TRX Suspension Trainer, a highly portable performance training tool that leverages gravity and the user’s body weight to complete hundreds of exercises.”
 
Following the fun yet challenging sweat session, teen guests were inspired, enlightened and entertained as they received health and school related advice from OB/GYN Dr. Afriye Amerson and registered nurse / TV correspondent Anthea Noel aka “Nurse Noel”. Damaris Lewis shared her story of growing up in Brooklyn’s Coney Island neighborhood to being discovered by Elite modeling agency. Lewis’ successful fashion career has included several billboards and the cover of Fitness magazine (June 2013) as well as campaigns for Nike, Clarins, Victoria’s Secret ’s Pink line, and Yves Saint Laurent. The Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts graduate is currently the famed musician Prince’s muse and has traveled the globe as his key dancer. She also shares her love for basketball as a correspondent for the NBA.
 
Mentors Aeshia DeVore Branch (CEO/Founder of Teen Diaries / Pretty Girls Sweat) and Diabetes Awareness advocate Diana Dotel, as well as teen model / fitness enthusiast Cleopatra Lee, broke a sweat with the intimate group of teen girls and shared words of encouragement as they played fun team-building games that helped the group learn more about one another.
 
Guests left with TRUKFIT backpacks filled with Pretty Girls Sweat tanks, back to school supplies, nail polish, bookmarks, FITNESS Magazine’s September issue, UBER gift cards, Kind Bars and SkinnyPop Popcorn. In April 2010, Debby Kamainsky founded a non-profit organization yoga program called Newark Yoga Movement in Newark, NJ. She saw the need for an inexpensive program that could help with the low high school graduation rates in Newark and decided yoga was the missing key. The mission of Newark Yoga Movement is to meet every Newark child where they are, bring them life skills through the practice of yoga, breathing and centering at their schools and in their communities as well as sharing life enhancing tools with children. The Newark Yoga Movement enhances the educational experience and provides easy access to increased peacefulness, focus and confidence as a complementary source of discipline and structure for all. As time continues, the membership continues to grow and the children continue to benefit. @JennyAnnMcCarthy, a co-host on ABC’s “The View”, is a mother of a young boy who has overcome autism. After her many appearances in numerous television shows and movies, Jenny also dedicated a portion of her life to volunteering. She is currently an environmental and autism activist, and has published a handful of books regarding her experiences with life, pregnancy, and autism. Being in the media often, it is important to Jenny that she looks her best, which is why she does yoga! Jenny’s favorite type of yoga is Bikram yoga, also known as hot yoga, which is a 90-minute yoga workout that includes the same series of 26 postures and two breathing exercises. She says that yoga has been in her life for three years now and it has helped her lose weight after her pregnancy and stay in shape. Jenny engages in yoga every day and it has helped her maintain a strong, healthy body!
