Endurance running can be a very intimidating activity for many (especially if sprinting to catch the school bus is the furthest distance you’ve ever completed). So Teen Diaries co-hosted a Pretty Girls Sweat running event with natural hair/beauty blogger Francheska Medina of HeyFranHey.com and entrepreneur / fitness enthusiast Samantha Jo Alonso of Undo-Ordinary/Fruition LV to extinguish the fear of running. With just a mile on our agenda, followed by a picnic in a park, New York City teens flocked to Central Park on Saturday, June 12th to give running a go.

TALENTED TEEN TUESDAY | Brooke Morgan is an outstanding athlete from Firestone High School in Akron,Ohio. As a FOUR- sport athlete, she competed in golf, cross country, basketball, and track during her high school career and received 13 varsity letters! Morgan was asked her most memorable moment she’s had as an athlete at Firestone: “I would definitely have to say just being in the starting lineup sophomore year when we were city champs and sectional champs.” We finished the regular season 20-0 and we were ranked No. 6 in the state. I got to experience such an exciting year at such a young age which was great.” During her junior year, the Firestone girls’ golf team didn’t have enough players to field a team so Morgan had to tryout for the boys’ team. She was the Falcons’ No. 6 golfer and helped them win the City Series championship! Upon graduating this month, Brooke will receive an athletic scholarship to play golf at Walsh University. Brooke Morgan is definitely a pretty girl who sweats! #BrookeMorgan #prettygirlssweat #pgs #running #crosscountry #track #basketball #golf #fitspiration #fitspo #akronhs #walshuniversity #StudentAthlete #Sweatspiration

HAPPY FATHER’S DAY | It’s difficult to think about the sport of boxing without the last name Ali coming to mind. Muhammad Ali and his daughter Laila Ali are arguably two of the best boxers of all time. Considered to be a cultural icon and nicknamed “The Greatest,” Muhammad Ali is a heavy weight boxing champion that is an inductee into the International Hall of Fame. He is also one of three boxers to be named “Sportsman of the Year” by Sports Illustrated. Like father, like daughter, Laila Ali is definitely “a chip off the bold block.” She began boxing at the age of 15 and contemplated boxing professionally by the age of 18 despite her father’s ill feelings toward her decision to engage in such a dangerous activity. Already known to be a “tough girl,” an immediate interest in boxing professionally was sparked upon learning that women could be paid for it. Although retired, she has a current record of 24-0 with 21 of the wins being KOs. She also holds numerous titles such as World Champion, IBA, WIBA, and IWBF. The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree and the Ali’s have earned a well deserved spot atop the kingdom of boxing. #PGSBoxing #FathersDay2013 #PrettyGirlsSweat #MuhammadAli #LailaAli #Ali #TheGreatest #Sweat #Boxing #KnockOut #WomensBoxing #HappyFathersDay #FathersDay

THROWBACK THURSDAY | Althea Gibson was the Jackie Robinson of tennis who broke barriers as one of the first African American players in professional tennis. She paved the way for tennis players such as Venus and Serena Williams, and more tennis players to come.

Althea Gibson was born in South Carolina in 1927, but she moved to Harlem, NY during her childhood. She was naturally gifted in sports as well. In the late 1940s and at the start of 1950, the U.S. Lawn Tennis Association (USLTA), still didn’t allow black tennis players to participate. However, after some convincing from journalists and other tennis players, such as Alice Marble, the USLTA allowed Gibson to compete in the U.S. Nationals in New York in 1950. She was the first African-American to do so.

In 1951, she became the first African American to play at Wimbledon. During the 1950s, Gibson won a total of 11 major singles and doubles titles. After retirement from the game in 1968, Althea Gibson continued to coach younger tennis players. Althea Gibson died of respiratory failure at age 76 in East Orange, New Jersey, on Sept. 28, 2003. #AltheaGibson #prettygirlssweat #pgs #tennis #wimbledon #Sweatspiration #throwbackthursday #fitness #exercise #BlackHistory #Sports #Athletes #WomensHistory

WORKOUT WEDNESDAY | Jump In! When was the last time you jumped rope? Was it when you were a youngster singing songs as you skipped to it, or perhaps during a game of double dutch with your girls? Either way, you were burning calories and probably didn’t know it. Jump rope is a low impact exercise that improves cardiovascular fitness and tones muscle. In addition to being cheap and portable, it carries long term benefits such as increasing bone density minimizing the risk of developing osteoporosis. As women, this is extremely important because the risk of women in their 70’s developing the disease is double the occurrence in men. Research also shows that circuit exercises are the most effective ways to boost the metabolism and burn fat. Grab a rope, and jump in! *As a safety precaution, avoid jumping rope on hard surfaces (concrete, tile) and instead opt for ones that will absorb impact (dirt/soft track, rubberized surface). #PGSJumpRope #June #PrettyGirlsSweat #Fitness #Sweat #Circuit #women #jumprope #burnfat #health #WorkoutWednesday #Workout #Exercise
