JACKS JACKS JACKS | To preform star jacks, you start in a squat position. Your body will explode as you jump as high as possible. At the same time you need to fully extend your entire body, spreading your legs and arms away from the body resembling a star in the air. As you land, bring your limbs back to neutral and keep a bent knee to absorb your impact upon the ground.

For cheer jacks, you are doing a jumping jack with your arms and legs forming a “V” in the air. Once you touch your toes while in midair, you will squeeze your legs back to neutral upon landing. The biggest difference between Star and Cheer jacks is that Cheer jacks are typically seen in Cheerleaders floor routine or performances. They are being thrown into the air by four spotters and safely secured in a basket catch once they land.

Practice makes perfect! Jump into this month’s Sweat Makes Cents challenge with a different style of jumping jacks. Help raise awareness for child obesity and enter for the chance to win prizes! Here’s how to participate: 1) Record a 15 second INSTAGRAM video of yourself doing jumping jacks, cheer jacks, star jacks, crisscross jacks, clapping jacks, etc. During your video (while you do the jacks), say the following: “I accepted the SWEAT MAKES CENTS challenge from @PrettyGirlsSweat and I challenge @____ and @____ to 100 jumping jacks and a donation of $10 to TeenDiariesFoundation.org to help end child obesity” 2) Tag #SweatMakesCents #PrettyGirlsSweat to raise awareness and for the chance to win prizes! 3) Encourage your friends to participate. 4) START TODAY! #PrettyGirlsSweat #pgs #sweatmakescents #fitnesschallenge #LetsMove #MichelleObama #Firstlady #Strength #StayFit #Toning #Exercise #Health #Instafit #Body #WeightLoss #TempleUniversity #PGStempleU #tu15 #tu16 #tu17 #tu18 | Written By: Raven, 21 (@_RavenAshley)

PROTECT YOUR HEART! Obesity has been linked to various health issues and medical conditions, one of the most detrimental being heart disease. There are a multitude of illnesses that are completely out of our control and many we don’t know about yet but for the ones we can prevent, we should. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) reports that heart disease is the #1 cause of death for both men and women, with approximately 600,000 lives lost each year. About half of Americans have at least one of the key risk factors related to heart disease which is high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and smoking. Type 2 diabetes, poor diet, and physical inactivity are other lifestyle choices and medical conditions that have put people at a higher risk for the disease. Maintaining a fruits and vegetable rich diet, which is low in sodium, saturated fat, and cholesterol can make a world of a difference in decreasing your risk, as well as taking just 30 minutes out of your day to be physically active.
