PRETTY GIRLS SWEAT: Shameless Maya Inspires Teen Girls Through Fun Fitness Challenge

No Shame, No Pain, No Gain. On Saturday, July 12th, 2014 the Teen Diaries Foundation’s PRETTY GIRLS SWEAT program and nearly 100 teen girls and young women joined youtube sensation Shameless Maya for a fun fitness challenge called Gym Rat Race at Central Park in NYC.

While local residents happily walked their dogs and completed their morning runs, heads turned to see dozens of dedicated girls, including teen model / fitness enthusiast Cleopatra Lee, connect through the power of fitness.

Crunch fitness instructor Courtney Alexander led the team-building yet super competitive routine she created with high energy music, fun fitness games, and relay races that sent echoes of supportive cheers throughout the park. “This is possibly one of the most exciting and challenging workouts we have ever hosted,” says Teen Diaries Foundation/Pretty Girls Sweat founder Aeshia DeVore Branch. “The energy of the teen girls and mentors had outsiders swarming to learn more about our powerful program.”

Mentors included music publisher Angelique Miles, nurse / Centric TV on-air health expert Anthea G. Noel, Hip Hop artist Audra The Rapper, entertainment journalist / co-host of VH1’s The Gossip Table Delaina Dixon, model / DJ Tygr, People magazine reporter Janine Rubenstein, Sundance Channel ad sales executive / vocalist / performance coach Keanna “KJ Rose” Henson, Miss Grand Haiti / Miss Teen NY Lisa Drouillard, writer / researcher Sharlyn Pierre (In Style magazine), and Zakia Blain of FBF Fitness all supported the “Sweat Sisterhood” by sharing their career and health related successes and struggles.

ABOUT:
Shameless Maya, born Maya Washington, is a creative artist in every sense of the word. The youtuber, who has amassed nearly half a million subscribers with her vibrant videos that showcase her celebrity transformations, hair tutorials, musical talent, and experience in the tech world, is also a photographer (she recently exclusively shot Prince's 2014 Essence Festival concert in New Orleans) and a voice over actor for kiddy shows, audio books, and commercials. The Canada native currently works with a production company that translates kid shows for children that are blind.

Courtney Alexander was a collegiate athlete, who turned her active lifestyle into a career. Courtney Specializes in Strength and Endurance Training, Weight Loss, and Core Training. The NY native has been featured in Crunch Gym Ads, on various television programs, such as The Today Show, Good Morning America, Good Day New York, and ABC News, demonstrating the newest fitness classes offered and is a featured model in Fitness Magazine (September 2013 Issue). Courtney is also the creator of Gym Rat Race, a fitness class that is currently offered at Crunch Gym (NYC). “I like to incorporate fun into fitness to help make it easier for people to continue with their fitness goals. Achieving a (fitness) goal can be overwhelming, so it’s important to keep positive and take it one day/one workout at a time. It is very rewarding to help someone reach their fitness goals; to see them throughout the process and see how their body and spirits changes.”

Teen Diaries Foundation Inc., provides hands on and virtual programming for multicultural women (ages 13-22) across the nation. The direct service includes Pretty Girls Sweat fitness events focused on motivating young women to live active lifestyles, participate in organized sports, and support the fight against childhood obesity as well as a mentoring portion dedicated to linking young girls with professional women who work in the entertainment industry. The Pretty Girls Sweat (PGS) Ambassador program gives college students the opportunity to encourage their peers to stay fit by giving them a platform to create and publish inspirational social media content and host on-campus fitness gatherings. In addition, the Teen Reporter Program provides hands on and e-mentoring to high school and college age students interested in pursuing careers in journalism (such as online media, radio, TV, newspaper, and magazines) and annual college scholarships to 10 carefully selected reporters.
