PRETTY GIRLS SWEAT’s February photo contest winner, Shari Jarrett, is a former high school teacher turned yoga instructor. While pursuing a degree in medicine, the future doctor used yoga as a stress reliever for her rigorous studies. The Miami, Florida native, who now resides in Atlanta, GA, shares her passion for health and fitness on rootsrockyoga.com. She undoubtedly embodies the true essence of our mission here at PRETTY GIRLS SWEAT! Luckily for us, we were able to catch up with Shari to chat about her fitness journey and so much more.
Tell us how your winning photo came about?
I did a lifestyle challenge for the whole month of January with business rules for women to help women take charge of their work-life balance, health & overall well-being. I shot these photos back in my hometown of Miami because South Florida brings out the best in me and I wanted that to show in these photos.
Please briefly share your fitness journey with us.
While traveling and doing medical missions around the world, I learned that the happiest & healthiest people cared about what they ate and were extremely active. Around that time I decided to make a conscious effort to take care of myself and my health. I became vegan(ish) and started exercising a lot more. I started practicing yoga in particular as a stress reliever when I started Medical School. It is so important for us to take care of our mental health as much as our bodies. Yoga became my meditation and helped me deal with all the doldrums of being in a rigorous program. I fell in love with the practice and decided to become a certified yoga instructor.
We believe fitness + friendship = FUN! What is your favorite group fitness workout?
Yoga of course!
While working out is important, so is eating the right foods. What is your go-to pre-workout meal? How do you refuel after a workout?
I am vegan, so my pre-workout meal options vary between either a smoothie, vegan yogurt with fruit and nuts or a rice cake with nut butter. For a post workout, I eat something high in protein like curry chickpeas & brown rice.

What is one thing people would be surprised to learn about you?
I only have one kidney! I donated a kidney to my sister who was on dialysis. Greatest decision I ever made! I encourage everyone to consider organ donation. It's life changing.
What are your top three goals you hope to accomplish in life?
1. Start a non-profit for young girls that teaches self-esteem building, careers in the sciences & fitness.
2. I would like to do Medical Television (like Dr. OZ!) & practice medicine around the world.
3. Take a trip around the world with my parents because they sacrificed so much for me to accomplish my dreams so in return I promise to show them the world!

It celebrates the beauty and strength of women. It admires the fact that these things are not mutually exclusive. That we celebrate our bodies not to meet society's standards of beauty but to be our best selves!
