PRETTY GIRLS SWEAT’s August photo contest winner, Salina Duggan, is a personal trainer and health educator from Lakeville, Massachusetts. The 29-year-old has earned a BA at Boston University and an MS from American University. As a fitness and health advocate, Duggan lives by Former First Lady Michelle Obama’s famous quote, “Being a healthy woman isn't about needing to get on a scale or measuring your waistline. We need to start focusing on what matters-on how we feel, and how we feel about ourselves.”
It’s safe to say that Duggan has brains, beauty, and isn't afraid to break a sweat which is what we’re all about at PRETTY GIRLS SWEAT. We had the chance to chat with Salina about her fitness journey and so much more. Read on to see what Salina had to say!
1. Tell us how your winning photo came about?
I was at my parent's house visiting with my sisters and niece. We were all sitting in the living room, and I noticed we were all sort of "zoned out" looking at our phones, watching tv, etc. I decided I wanted to MOVE and change the situation, so I got down on the living room floor and started doing some handstands & headstands! My niece, Michelle, who is seven years old and a little acrobat, immediately followed suit. Before I knew it, my two sisters were also rolling around with us! Once we were all on board, we decided to take our handstands, bridges, and splits outside! My mother came out shortly after and started taking photos of us :)
2. Please briefly share your fitness journey with us.
I grew up playing sports and was a competitive gymnast for many years. These activities helped me to build a strong foundation both physically and mentally. I always grew up eating healthy (thanks to my mother!), and as I got older, I realized how my healthy lifestyle attributed to my happiness and overall well-being. After I had graduated college, I decided that I wanted to take everything I had learned on a personal level and help others to enhance their quality of life. I became a personal trainer and went back to graduate school for health promotion management, and I've been working in the health and wellness field ever since!
3. We believe fitness + friendship = FUN! What is your favorite group fitness workout?
I love going to boot camp-style classes, especially when I want to take a group class. The energy you get from others is unreal, & I love how the exercises are so varied. I also love a good hot/power yoga class to help work on my flexibility and strength.
4. While working out is important, so is eating the right foods. What is your go-to pre-workout meal? How do you refuel after a workout?
I completely agree that eating healthy and working out go hand in hand, and you really can't have a good balance of health without both! Since I normally get my workouts in earlier in the day, my pre-workout meals are usually my breakfast! I love having a bowl of steel-cut oats mixed with banana, blueberries, and some honey drizzled on top. I really enjoy the Orgain Organic Protein (which is a plant-based protein powder). I put a scoop in with my water or almond milk, and it's a great source of protein post-workout!!
5. What is one item that is always in your gym bag?
Headphones! I love listening to music to help keep me motivated when I'm working out
6. What are your top 3 fitness Instagram accounts to follow?
@kaisafit - She's a badass with a workout ethic like no other. I love all of her athleticism and varied workouts. It's not just straight lifting (even though she can lift like a beast!)- it's flexibility, it's plyometrics, it's agility, it's power!! I get a lot of personal inspiration from her page and she also reminds me of how much you really can do at home and with little to no equipment. Not only this, but I admire her body and how it breaks from the conventional mold of what a female's body "should look like." She's thick, strong, and absolutely beautiful!!
@hannahbronfman - She's one of those jack-of-all trades kinda gals which is super impressive to me! She posts about health, beauty, fitness, and her fashion sense is so on point! I love how she mixes it up and her passion for life shows through on her IG.
@massy.arias - You can't help but be inspired by this woman- she's truly electric! She's always providing motivational content, as well as regular workouts & healthy recipes & tips. She's a coach, hard-worker practicing what she preaches, and she'll brighten up your feed on a daily basis.
7. What is one thing people would be surprised to learn about you?
Although my profession requires me to be outgoing and somewhat of an extrovert (and I also am super social!), I love having alone time to recharge at home with a good book.
8. What are your top three goals you hope to accomplish in life?
I would someday love to have my own fitness studio/run my own business, have enough steady income that I can travel often. I love traveling to new places, within the US and beyond!

I love empowering women to embrace their strength, both physically and mentally. Despite how the media sometimes portrays us, we are magical- our beauty, strength, and intelligence. PRETTY GIRLS SWEAT celebrates women and their infinite capabilities!! Amazing things happen when women support each other!
