Meet Sahara Gipson: March 2017’s Photo Contest Winner

PRETTY GIRLS SWEAT’s March photo contest winner, Sahara Gipson, is an all-around gymnast at Temple University. The 19-year-old junior, who majors in  Media Studies and Production with a minor in Public Relations, loves to dance and uses the activity as a fun way to break a sweat. As a successful student, the Oakland, NJ native is also making huge leaps in the classroom. Her 3.5 GPA landed her on the President's Honor Roll, helped her become a proud member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Incorporated, and aided her acceptance into the PRETTY GIRLS SWEAT ambassador program. She undoubtedly embodies the true essence of our mission here at PRETTY GIRLS SWEAT! Luckily for us, we were able to catch up with the Sahara to chat about her fitness journey and so much more.

Tell us how your winning photo came about?

My team and I just finished competing at a meet! The day was so beautiful and we wanted to take advantage of the lighting.

Please briefly share your fitness journey with us.

Well, I have been doing gymnastics since I was 3. I have always been pretty active growing up but it wasn't until high school when I started to workout for fun. I wanted to be confident with my body and feel like I was doing my best to keep myself healthy.

We believe fitness + friendship = FUN! What is your favorite group fitness workout?

I love to dance. My favorite group fitness class includes both choreography and cardio. Dancing is already very fun for me but being surrounded by great people makes it even better.

While working out is important, so is eating the right foods. What is your go-to pre-workout meal? How do you refuel after a workout?

My go-to pre-workout meal includes a bottle of water and a lot of fruit. I like to start with water so I can stay hydrated during my workout. My post workout usually consists of more water and some carbs.

What is one item that is always in your gym bag?

My headphones! I always have a playlist ready to go to get me pumped up!

What are your top 3 fitness Instagram accounts to follow?

@massy.arias, @mynameisjessamyn and @aeshiadevorebranch

What is one thing people would be surprised to learn about you?

I am a theater kid at heart. I love the arts and randomly sing musical theater songs.

What are your top three goals you hope to accomplish in life?

1. Travel as much as I can.
2. Live life to the fullest. (Happiness, carefree, spontaneous, etc.)
3. Have a career that I love and am passionate about.

What does PRETTY GIRLS SWEAT mean to you?

PRETTY GIRLS SWEAT means breaking down barriers of "no, because you're a girl." Too many times, girls are criticized about body image, participation in certain sports and that the gym is no place for girls. Well, PRETTY GIRLS SWEAT creates safe and free spaces for girls and women to workout and live healthy lifestyles. The best part is that we are all able to do it together and create this amazing sweat sisterhood.

FOUNDER | Aeshia is living her dream. The social entrepreneur unites and empowers girls to be health leaders in their communities. The child obesity epidemic along with the void of entertaining yet positive fitness content and events for young women (ages 13-22) led to the conception and rapid growth of her passionate venture. Before creating Pretty Girls Sweat, Aeshia worked in the TV industry for over 9 years - working her way up from an intern at ABC to a producer on Sundance Channel's celebrated, primetime series ICONOCLASTS. The former high school athlete (track, volleyball, and basketball) and proud member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. was also a model for Wilhelmina in New York City. In her free time, the wife and mother of three girls enjoys reading inspirational books, listening to music, eating great food with friends, and enjoying the outdoors.
