Issa Rae Reveals The Super Simple Ways She Stays In Shape

It goes without saying that Issa Rae is blossoming into quite the powerhouse in Hollywood. Her hit HBO series Insecure is going on its fourth season. She’s set to star in the HBO show The Dolls. Her first feature film, Littleis rolling into theatres this month. AND she'll be starring in a romantic comedy called The Lovebirds scheduled to debut in 2020. Talk about booked, blessed, and busy!

Though she spends countless hours shooting and producing for the big and small screen, one thing that Rae has learned to always make time for is her health. Back in 2018, the talented actor/writer/director/producer briefly chatted with Cosmopolitan about how she maintains her body. "I thrive off fresh starts. I will do a cleanse or diet — I need a reset button," Rae told the publication. "So seeing myself on TV for a season was an excuse to be like ‘I want to lose a couple of pounds.’ I want to look my best, be my best, and feel my best."

Recently, she provided fans with a more in-depth look at her fitness journey and nutrition habits. As the cover girl for Women’s Health April 2019 issue, Hollywood's latest "It Girl" opened up about how she's been able to stay healthy despite her extremely hectic schedule. To learn more, keep reading for a few main takeaways from the amazing interview — including everything from how she likes to break a sweat in the mornings to maintaining her mental health.

On when she realized she needed to prioritize fitness...

"When the Web series started, I was very, very broke. Then more opportunities began to come. I was gaining New Money Weight. When you get a good job, you’re like, ‘I can afford to eat at restaurants all the time!’ That adds up in weight. Time to work out is so limited, but when I first started seeing myself on TV, I was like, ‘I gotta make time."

Her go-to sweat sesh...

“Let me not put extras on it. I exercise for, like, an hour each day. My neighborhood has a bunch of hills, so it's walking up hills. Then I alternate between walking and jogging. I hate jogging — you’re going in circles, but I recognize that it helps."

On how she manages to do it all...

“Find a good team. Find a good team. It matters.…It's enabled me to not lose my mind.”

How her workouts help her mental health...

"You know those earbuds that you put in your ears? I was running, and one fell. It was dark outside and I couldn't find it. So I was forced to just be alone with my thoughts, and I was like, 'Oh, I need to do this more often.' Those moments are the most creative. I think finding those moments while also nurturing your body is important."
