I WANT HER JOB: Indique Hair Co-Founder Ericka Dotson

Ericka Dotson set her initial career path towards a traditional office profession. Her passion shifted while working in a corporate environment in Austin, TX. She rekindled her love of hairstyling and began to sharpen her skills in hair extensions while working heavily with women experiencing hair loss diseases. Ultimately it was the frustration Dotson’s clients expressed when purchasing hair extensions that sparked the idea of creating Indiqué, a highly coveted premium hair company.  We chatted with the current New Jersey resident and mother of an amazing teen daughter to hear her career story. Get inspired!
Did you have a mentor or someone that inspired you? If so, what have you learned from that person?
The key people who inspired me were my parents. I was a curious and creative child growing up. Oftentimes, creatives are misunderstood. They supported me through all of my interests and taught me to always go after whatever made me feel good inside. They told me, "If it doesn't feel right, then it's not for you." I follow their advice to this day.
Where did you go to college and what was your major?
I went to Howard University's School of Communications in Washington, DC. College was one of my top experiences in life. Not only was it academically enlightening; it opened my eyes to the many facets of people all over the country, my college mates. I found the trends each person brought to the table to be very interesting. Their east coast attitude, southern charm, and Cali cool traits gave me incite on specific demographics. When I began to market my product, this experience helped me achieve confidence in understanding how to market to specific demographics within our culture.
What was your first job out of college, and how did you get it?
I worked at a passport agency. I was responsible for expediting passports for individuals all over the world. My daily routine involved reviewing the passport applications, visiting all of the embassies, submitting, and picking up passports. I simply applied for the job after seeing the listing. I was called in for an interview and expressed great interest in the position.  Within a few days, I landed the job! It was an amazing experience.
What has been your greatest accomplishment so far in your career?
My greatest accomplishment is providing jobs to talented individuals who are passionate about their craft. It's so rewarding to be surrounded by a team who cares about the common goal and will do all they can for my company's success.
What elements of your job excite you?
Hair transformations never get old. It's exciting to see the smile on a client's face when they've achieved their dream hairstyle with Indique hair. You can actually feel their confidence!
What qualities or personality traits helped you get to where you are today?

I'm a fearless individual and when I set my mind on doing something and put my heart into it, I don't stop until I achieve my goal.
What are the major perks of your job?
Well... the obvious. I have luxurious hair to wear. Any length, any texture! It's a great benefit, to say the least.
What are some of your favorite haircare products?
I love Indique Hair Care Essentials Shampoo, Conditioner and Argan oil. They maintain the integrity of your natural hair and hair extensions.
If you knew everything at the beginning of your career that you know now, what would you have done differently?
I wouldn't change a thing. I embrace the issues that come my way because I learn from them. In order to be successful, you must step outside of your comfort zone and push yourself to the next level of achievement.
What advice would you give to a young woman who wants to follow in your footsteps?
My best advice is to never give up on what you believe could be your pathway to a fruitful existence. Follow your instincts and allow your heart to guide your mind. It's your life, and it's important that you love what you do.
