Now onto our next great holiday... New Year's. Of course, with New Year's comes New Year's resolutions and nearly half of us are making them, but less than 10 percent of us are actually keeping them. Whether it's a lack of motivation, lack of resources, or we just lose interest, it's time to make a fresh start and figure out ways to finish what we've started.
According to American author, C. Robert, "character is the ability to carry out a good resolution long after the excitement of the moment has passed." Since many of us struggle with maintaining New Year's Resolutions, this quote truly made me think. Instead of creating a bulleted list of resolutions, committing to one measurable goal may actually increase the likelihood of success.
So we asked some members of our Dream Team what's their top goal for 2019 and how they plan on keeping it throughout the year.
My goal for 2019 is to be more intentional with who and where I give my energy to. I need to stop being there for everyone at the expense of myself. Instead, I would like to reflect upon whether or not certain people and activities deserve my time before I engage. - Sheevah, 20 (Captain | Virginia State University)
One of my goals for 2019 is to become financially healthy as I move into the next phase of my life. I am planning out where I want to be in advance and taking steps to make sure that I can get there! - Erika, 20 (VP Membership | Virginia State University)
One of my personal goals is to cut off all toxic relationships. I don't want to go into this year feeling like people are holding me back from my dreams or dulling my light. This year my light will shine brighter and bigger than 2018 and I won't let anybody stop me. - Victoria, 19 (Captain | Bennett College)
My personal goal for this year is to transform more of my ideas into actions. It can be a little difficult for me to act in the face of discouragement, but I think those are the times that I need to push forward especially if it’s something that I believe in. - Kristen, 21, (Captain | Binghamton University)
One of my goals this year is to take more risks in life and to walk by faith. I’m very good at putting things that scare me off for the future instead of just facing them head on and doing them, no matter the outcome. So this year I plan on fixing that. - Kashanti, 19 (Product Management Intern | Georgia State University)
My goal is to make 2019 the year where I work on being more consistent, disciplined, and unafraid to chase after the things that I desire. I want to make more strides in my career as a journalist/creative. - Olivia, 19 (Sweatlebrity Reporter, Editorial Intern | Georgia State University)
For this year, my main goal is to be more persistent and put all my energy into the things I am more passionate about. Also, to stay true to myself by not putting my feelings/emotions to the side just to “go with the flow.” This year is the year to strive for greatness and continue to grow into the person I want to become. One of my goals is to be more consistent, and not to have an “all or nothing” attitude. Even if I’m not 100% every day it doesn’t mean I should give up, even baby steps add up. Layla, 23 (Nutritionist | Rutgers University)
