DIANA ESPIR: The Singer Reveals Everything, from being a Tomboy to her Fave Fashion Find

Diana Espir is a dynamic girl that likes to sing, dance, act and write songs in two different languages. She was once a contestant on The Voice France and has been immersed in the music world since she was two years young. Now, a grown up herself, she has made it into the industry and her last adventure has been releasing a single called "Tomboy" featuring award-winning artist Nelly.

We had the opportunity to chat with her about relationships, music, being a "tomboy" and much more! Check it out below!

When and how did you start making music?
I started playing the piano at the age of 2. I used to go to piano lessons with my older sister and her teacher noticed my enthusiasm to play. She came up with a method to teach such a young pupil. Singing came later on after when she sadly passed away…

What led to your decision to audition for The Voice?
My dream was to be part of a show (musical) in France and the casting director for the Voice France is absolutely amazing! He casts all major shows there so I thought it would be a good platform to get noticed by industry professionals.

How would you define your music style?
I’ve gone through many phases but at the moment it is sounding more pop with an urban twist.

What inspires your lyrics?
Everything! My lyrics aren’t necessarily always based on personal experiences. My inspiration also comes from what my friends and family are going through. I like to write lyrics that people can relate to and sometimes, I try to elaborate on themes that aren’t always the most obvious ones for me.

What instruments do you play?
I used to play the piano but now, I will only play when I need chords to write melodies / lyrics. I have also taken a few guitar lessons and picked it up quite easily but haven’t carried on so far.

Who is your favorite artist?
That’s a really tough question to answer! As an artist, I listen to so many people and appreciate them all for various reasons. I do look up to people like Pink, Beyonce and Sia amongst others.

Who would be your dream music collaboration, dead or alive?
I’m just so happy to have had the opportunity to work with an artist as talented as Nelly! I never know how to answer that question because as I said, there are too many amazing people I appreciate and respect so much, I just hope one day, they would like to collaborate with me!

If you weren't a musician what do you think you'd be doing right now?
I always wanted to be in the ‘performing arts’ so back in Paris, I was doing voice-overs, and almost debuted as a presenter. I was also casted for a play so I would probably be acting, on stage or as a voice artist. I took a risk by leaving it all behind to pursue music!

How many languages do you speak?
English and French. I also used to study Spanish back in high school but am probably rubbish now!

Have you ever thought of singing in any language other than English?
Yes, I also sing in French.

Do you have any hobbies besides music?
I love dancing and acting, although they are not activities I practice as hobbies anymore, but I still enjoy it just as much! I used to be a makeup assistant back in London so I love trying new things on myself as well as looking at pictures in magazines. I also love photography, but don’t know much about it. I just like playing around with my camera. Anything creative!

How would you define your style?
I think I would call it 'street glam'. I dress casual with a bit of an edge, I’ll add a more elegant touch if necessary depending on the occasion.

Speaking of Tomboy... do you consider yourself a tomboy?
I’m definitely not the cliché of what you would call a Tomboy! But that’s the point we tried to make with this record. I do think every girl has it in her; no girl wakes up in pretty clothes and with pretty lashes and is only interested in activities that are extremely ‘girly.’ I think we all have that little rebellious side to us. I have always been more comfortable around my guy friends for sure, especially following a few bad episodes with groups of girls, and Tomboy is about that cool girl that guys would like to have as a friend but who also might have the potential grow into becoming their partner.

What's your biggest pet peeve?
Mine is really weird! I get very annoyed when I am standing in a line and the person behind me is stuck against me and gives me no personal space. I don’t know why I have always had an issue with that; it’s very weird!

What's your favorite fashion item in your closet?
My leather jacket! I could wear one with absolutely everything from a cute girly dress to tracksuit bottoms! I think it looks good with everything.

What are your makeup essentials?
Eyebrow pencil and an under-eye concealer, I’m a bad sleeper!

What's your favorite place in Europe?
London, I loved living there! Except for the weather but it is such an amazing place you just forget about it…

Who is your celebrity crush?
Jake Gyllenhaal

What would be your ideal date?
I think dates are overrated. I prefer a natural connection between two people and it is nice to let that grow naturally, whereas dates can often feel too ‘planned’. If I had to pick I guess it would be something VERY casual that isn’t like having an interview whilst eating dinner.

Do you have any relationship advice for teenagers?
I think the most common mistake with teenage relationships is getting too carried away and going for someone you are attracted to but that isn’t necessarily the right person for you. Growing up, I have learned that it is important to be with someone that makes you happy, makes you laugh and doesn’t make you feel insecure. Someone you can really be completely yourself around.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
I would love to be an accomplished artist that has inspired others to follow their dreams as well as having a family.

What advice would you give to young musicians who want to make it to the industry?
I don’t think there are rules in this industry anymore; so don’t make music with the intention of making everybody like you and your work. Do what you like because that will make you unique and grow into the artist you would like to become. Post videos online, share your work, try and get a few little gigs to begin with, do not judge yourself (because no one likes themselves really) and eventually, someone will believe in your talent. It might not lead to exactly what you had expected, but something will come out of it and make you proud of yourself. Accomplishing something doing what you love is one of the best feelings!

What's up next for you?
I will be going on tour for the promotion of ‘Tomboy.’ I am so excited to visit places I have never been to in the U.S!

The 19 year-old from Spain has a Moroccan and Cameroonian heritage and claims to be an intersectional feminist who wants to help girls understand how to fight their oppression. Writing about different issues has become her main hobby, even though she never forgets to sing and play instruments every now and then.
