Calling all chocolate lovers! Did you know chocolate can help you achieve a mentally clear and calm state in addition to satisfying your sweet tooth? I know what you’re thinking: isn’t chocolate self-indulgent and unhealthy? While chocolate does receive these sorts of reviews, its delicious taste can be advantageous for your mental health. Chocolate meditations only succeed when you connect your senses, which requires a strong amount of concentration. Since they are considered to be one of the most convenient and simple meditations, try following these steps to calm your mind!
1. Choose Your Chocolate
According to Psychology Today, you want to choose chocolate that “you've never tried before or one that you have not eaten recently.” Concentrating on the chocolate’s unfamiliar flavor further exercises your senses, giving you the best possible experience.
2. Remove Distractions
One of the biggest keys to successful meditations is canceling any distractions. You want to fully zone in on the taste, and unnecessary noises can affect that focus.
3. Breathe In
When you open the packet, take a deep breath and inhale the chocolate scent. Is the smell different from other chocolates? How is it different? How is it similar? These questions test your sense of smell while also opening you to a mindful comparison.
4. Use Your Eyes
Look at the whole piece of candy. Examine the shape—every dip, etch, nook, curve or point. Again, compare its structure with other pieces of chocolate you’ve seen and note the differences and similarities.
5. Taste It
Pop a little piece of chocolate in your mouth. Taste the many different flavors. If you can, let it sit on your tongue and allow it to melt. Feel the change in structure and compare it to its construction before you let it melt. If the chocolate won’t melt, bite it and feel the crunchiness. Also, notice the change in composition as it breaks down in comparison to being whole.
6. Swallow and Savor
When you swallow, pay attention to how it goes down and feeling of swallowing. Recognize the chocolate’s exit from your mouth to your throat, and then to your stomach. Sit for a moment and savor the unfamiliar taste.
7. Do It Again
You can always repeat this process, but remember, you’re not supposed to consume a large amount of chocolate in one sitting. In fact, according to Very Well Mind, “if you're doing it carefully, you won't need to consume much at all.”
