4 Important Love Lessons I Learned During High School

We all know high school is a time when everyone becomes a bit more invested in their love life. The hallways are often filled with affectionate couples and it’s impossible to scroll through your Instagram feed without seeing a photo of your class sweethearts. However, aside from the excitement that comes with being with someone during high school, many lessons can be learned from being in a relationship during high school.

From being ghosted by someone I was interested in sophomore year to now being a senior in a long-term relationship, I have experienced an array of dating scenarios and have made it a point to learn from each situation. Here are four valuable love lessons I found out while dating over the past four years:

1. The best relationships happen organically.

You can’t go looking for love. It just happens when it’s supposed to. Trying to force a relationship between you and your crush will only make the connection strained and awkward. You have to let a connection between you and someone else happen naturally.

2. Take note of what people say about the person you like.

Rumors can sometimes be right. Whether someone has been telling you the person you like has a heart of gold or can be a thorn in your side in relationships, it’s beneficial to at least keep in mind what people say. You have to form your opinion, but knowing how others view your potential date is important.

3. The person you date should be your best friend.

A best friend is someone you can talk to about anything, share countless laughs with, and enjoy being around. The person you date should be all that and more. If you can’t be yourself around someone, that’s a sign that they aren’t the one for you

4. You need to be able to have time for “YOU.”

When you enter a new relationship, you often want to be around that person all the time. However, making time for yourself and doing the things you love without your significant other is important. Maintaining your individuality is key when dating at any point in life.
